South Minneapolis
This kitchen renovation was designed for a 1920s craftsman bungalow in South Minneapolis.
The design was inspired by European efficiency and small-space functionality. When working on an older home, the house itself becomes a client and we listened to what the space wanted to be. We opted to use IKEA’s modular solutions for their economical yet modern aesthetic. We used the same historic color pallet common throughout the rest of the home, contrasting the floors with bright whites and opted for a single shelf in place of upper cabinets in order to allow more natural light deeper into the space.
We explored various options to improve the functionality of the kitchen. Due to its small size, there was discussion about removing the sink wall separating the kitchen and dining area to create a more open floor plan, which is a popular modern approach. However, it stayed because we concluded that the wall maintained the integrity of the space and the historic nature of the home.
Renovating a kitchen with kids is no easy task. We took a phased approach and completed it in about two months.
