knotwork

knotwork
After receiving my M.Arch I studied soft sculpture and fabric art at the SAIC, learning the fundamentals of sewing and fashion design. When sewing by hand, I quickly learned that I was most interested in what was unseen - the knots which started each piece. I set out to make a series of works dedicated to displaying these knots within a formal grid system, articulating their individuality, while creating an abstract three-dimensional landscape. These works are dynamic and depending on the light source will project shadows within the grid void between the knots, creating a lively play between background and foreground.
Materials: Embroidery thread on watercolor paper
